How To Do The Japanese Walking Method

By Jennifer Tran

How To Do The Japanese Walking Method

The Japanese walking method is a 30-minute walking protocol that alternates three minutes of brisk walking with three minutes of slow walking. Research suggests it may improve cardiovascular fitness, leg strength and healthy blood pressure without requiring running or gym equipment.

Sooo, what Is the Japanese Walking Method?

Also known as Interval Walking Training, the method was developed by researchers at Shinshu University in Japan.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Walk at your normal pace for three minutes
  2. Then walk at a fast pace for three minutes.
  3. Repeat five times for a total of 30 minutes.
  4. Aim for four or more days per week.

During the brisk interval, your heart rate and breathing should increase, but you should still be able to speak in short sentences.

Is It Better Than Regular Walking?

Both are beneficial, but they challenge the body differently.

Regular walking Japanese walking
Maintains a comfortable pace Alternates brisk and slow intervals
Supports general daily movement Provides a greater fitness challenge
No timer required Uses three-minute timer alerts

A relaxed walk is still wonderful for daily movement and stress support. Japanese walking is useful when you want to increase the intensity without progressing to running.

What Are the Benefits?

Research involving middle-aged and older adults found that interval walking produced greater improvements in aerobic fitness, leg strength and blood pressure than continuous moderate-paced walking.

Further research found that the time spent fast walking was associated with improvements in fitness and markers linked with lifestyle-related disease.

Japanese walking may support:

  • Cardiovascular fitness
  • Leg strength and endurance
  • Healthy blood pressure
  • Metabolic health
  • Mood and healthy weight management

As a Clinical Naturopath, I recommend beginning at your current fitness level. Start with two or three rounds if 30 minutes feels too challenging, then build gradually.

Fuel Your Walk With Protein

Protein supports energy, muscle maintenance and exercise recovery. It becomes particularly important as we age and naturally begin to lose lean muscle.

Happy Weight is our trusted protein powder containing prebiotic fibre, probiotics and targeted nutrients to support lean muscle, digestion and healthy weight management.

Enjoy it in a smoothie before your walk or as an easy breakfast afterwards. Add fruit, nut butter and your preferred milk for a more complete meal.

Support Your Muscles Afterwards

The faster intervals ask more from your calves, thighs and glutes than a relaxed stroll.

Make sure to cool down gradually, drink enough water and eat adequate protein throughout the day. Magnesium also supports normal muscle function, energy production and relaxation.

MSP combines four complementary forms of magnesium with additional ingredients to support muscle recovery, relaxation and sleep. It can be added to your post-exercise or evening routine as your body adjusts to interval walking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can beginners try Japanese walking?

Yes. Begin with two or three intervals and gradually work towards the full 30 minutes.

Can Japanese walking support weight loss?

It may support healthy weight management by increasing physical activity. Nutrition, sleep, stress and overall lifestyle still matter.

Can I do it every day?

You can walk daily, but every walk does not need to be intense. Alternate Japanese walking with relaxed walks and allow time for recovery.

The Japanese walking method is simple: three minutes fast, three minutes slow and repeat. Support your routine with adequate protein, hydration, magnesium and rest—and focus on consistency rather than perfection.
