Taking good care of your skin can be much easier if you follow a simple and repeatable order for your skincare routine. While some sources, like Healthline, describe a complex and hard-to-follow skincare routine (11 steps!), we’ve found that a 4-step routine, in the proper order, will take great care of your skin.
Best Skin Care Routine
A skin care routine can (and should) be performed both in the morning and before bed. The goals for each are slightly different. Healthline explains that “morning skin care routines are all about prevention and protection. Your face is going to be exposed to the outside environment, so necessary steps include moisturizer and sunscreen.” At night, however, your skin care routine should focus on “repairing the damage done during the day” (Healthline).
The best news is that you can achieve both of these goals with the same products, and if applied in the most effective order, your skin care routine can be quick and effective.
Step 1: Exfoliating Face Mask
The first step in your skin care routine is to get rid of all of the dead skin and clear those pores. For this, an exfoliating face mask is the best choice. Your exfoliating face mask can be used in the morning (as Well and Good suggests), “to give your skin the base hydration it needs,” or at night (as Healthline recommends), “to remove leftover dirt and help the skin soak up other products.” You generally won’t want to include an exfoliating face mask in your skin care routine every day–once or twice a week should be enough.
Step 2: Face Cleanser
The next step (in order) in your skin care routine is a fabulous face cleanser. Applied every day, both in the morning and at night, a face cleanser’s job is to remove pollutants. In the morning, a face cleanser will remove the oil and residue that’s accumulated overnight. In the evening, a face cleanser will get rid of makeup and the grime of the day. This will prepare the skin for Step 3.
Step 3: Face Serum
The last step to get your skin care routine in order is powerful face serum. Face serums can help in a range of ways, from collagen-boosting and probiotics, to support for tone, hydration, and immune function. You will want to use your face serum after exfoliating and cleansing. Face serum can be used both morning and night.
Step 4: Face Cream
An excellent face cream is the vital next step in your skin care routine. Great face creams will hydrate and rejuvenate the skin to help with aging, wrinkles, and radiance. Some face creams come with antioxidants and probiotics, to improve skin tone and overall skin health. Like face cleansers, face cream can be used in the morning, at night, or both.
