What is Mittelschmerz?

What is Mittelschmerz?

Mittelschmerz certainly sounds like a strange word. It is derived from a German word which translates to 'middle pain'. ⁣This 'middle pain' is pain which women can experience in the middle of their menstrual cycle and is associated with ovulation.⁣

Pain associated with ovulation

Generally, around the middle of your cycle, you release a mature egg from a follicle in your ovary in conjunction with an LH (luteinizing hormone) surge. This is termed ovulation. Once an egg is released from your ovary, your fallopian tube will contract in efforts to help the egg meet sperm in preparation for fertilization. ⁣This process involves an increase of prostaglandins which can drive up inflammation and pain.

During this time, most women notice a change in the texture of their cervical fluid which becomes more slippery (fertile egg white fluid). If you are tracking your body temperature you may also notice a dip, and then a rise of about 0.5 degrees. In some women, ovulation can also be accompanied by spotting. ⁣

Any discomfort associated with ovulation should not be long-lasting. You may notice lower abdominal pain on one side, depending on which ovary is releasing the egg. It can feel like a sharp twinge, or range to more noticeable symptoms like bloating, nausea and intense pain.⁣ Some women only ever feel mittelschmerz on one side.

Charting your cycles

We know that not all women ovulate in the middle of their menstrual cycle, but mittelschmerz is specifically linked to ovulation. If you notice similar sensations cyclically, take note of the timing of the pain or sensations and see if there is a recurring pattern. The easiest way to do this is to track your cycles, and on the day you feel mittelschmerz, list down the noticeable symptoms. For instance, you can write ‘right-sided pain’ or ‘left-sided pain’, when you feel it, and then note when your period starts (usually 14 days after ovulation). After a few cycles of doing this, you will be able to distinguish between ovulation and any other type of pain you feel.

If the pain is not coinciding with ovulation, it may coincide with the premenstrual phase and be a symptom of PMS.

Natural methods to relieve Mittelschmerz pain:

  1. Heat
Applying a heat pack on your abdomen, taking a hot bath with Epsom salts, using a moxa stick over your abdomen can all help with increased circulation and ease cramping. Note: do not burn yourself.

  2. Massage and essential oils
Abdominal, buttock and lower back massage can be very helpful. Especially if you are finding that there are specific pressure points in these areas. Rub relaxing essential oils like lavender, ylang-ylang, and peppermint. Try laying on a foam roller, or even a golf ball or tennis ball to get into the pressure points in your lower back and buttocks.

  3. Yoga
Gentle yoga poses can help stretch the abdominal area to relieve pain.

  4. Breathing exercises
Deep diaphragm breathing into the abdominal cavity also helps a lot with pain relief and relaxation.

  5. Anti-inflammatory herbs
Drinking ginger and turmeric tea during this time can help with inflammation. Happy Turmeric can also assist with bringing down inflammation and pain. Read more about turmeric here.

  6. Supplements
Happy Hormones can be used to support a healthy female reproductive system and reduce symptoms associated with premenstrual tension. Magnesium can be great for relaxing muscles where there is spasm or pain. Read more about magnesium here – you can use it orally, in a bath, or topically.

Any pain which is abnormal for you – regardless of when you experience it – should be assessed and the following should be ruled out:

  • Sexually transmitted infections
  • Endometriosis
  • Appendicitis
  • Ruptured cyst/s
  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • Ectopic pregnancy

On the other hand, some women do not feel any sensations at all during ovulation.

Summary

Mittelschmerz is pain associated with ovulation. The intensity of the discomfort can vary across women. It is important to differentiate whether the pain that is felt is mittelschmerz, premenstrual pain, or something unrelated.

There are numerous natural methods on how to ease mittelschmerz pain and discomfort. Our naturopaths will be very happy to help you get to the bottom of any pain or discomfort you may be experiencing in relation to your menstrual cycle. Happy Hormones

In 2020 I started loosing a lot of hair from my crown. It was so distressing to see almost half of my thickness disappear in the last 2years. Then I started taking happy hormones at the beginning of this year and my crown has grown hair as have the sides of my temples which were empty. To say I am happy is an understatement I am forever grateful to have come across this incredible product. View the pictures now and before shots. Thankyou Happy Hormones your product is exceptional!

Thank Goodness I Found You!

I’ve been having hot flushes for about 4 years or so but am still only peri menopausal. My flushes have pretty much stopped, I probably chose the wrong time of year to start taking these wonder capsules as now I’m feeling the cold here in Melbourne…this time last year I was still walking around in t-shirts and Havi’s! Another amazing benefit is that I was still taking the contraceptive pill to regulate and to prevent severe cramping not only during my cycle but also during ovulation. I decided to stop taking the pill to see if my cycle had stopped naturally as I turned 50 in January, it hasn’t, so the ovulation pain that came 2 weeks later was excruciating and I was effectively bed ridden for 5 days! I was DREADING my period! Whilst ovulating I had starting taking Happy Hormones and lo and behold, when the period arrived, NO PAIN!! I had told my Dr that I had planned on restarting the pill….no longer necessary! I’m so extremely grateful to have found HH and that I took the chance to try something natural…it’s been a complete game changer for me!

Keep Calm and Carry On

Have been taking HH for about 5 years now and they truly work. The formula of HH is the best I have ever come across. I feel calmer taking them and they keep the hot flushes to either nothing or very mild. I take two capsules twice daily which seems to be the best maintenance dose. Go on try them, HH really work.

Amazing

I have been taking HH for over a year and each time i think I can go without them I notice such a decrease in energy and mood. They have made a significant difference to my life and mood. I am a shift worker and I highly recommend for any women peri menopausal and low energy levels.

Happy Hormones is my life saver

I started going through peri menopause and am having a period every 3-5 months. My biggest symptom beside insomnia is hot flushes. I was having one every 10 minutes and I became a very horrible person as I just couldn't stand them. Enter Happy Hormones, I was having 2 morning and night and it wasn't doing anything and then someone on the FB page suggested 3 morning and night and for that I am forever grateful as now I am not grumpy all the time and the hot flushes are like maybe 5 a day now. I am sure my husband and kids thanks you more :)

Mother's Little Helper

My great friend Lori Woodhouse recommended I take Happy Hormones almost four years ago. It is the only supplement I have really noticed a significant improvement in my well being. I haven't gone without it since! I went from struggling to cope with being a working mum to enjoying parenting, and being able to balance life. I returned to uni whilst still working, finished my degree, and accepted a new job which is interesting, family friendly and challenging. I don't believe I could have managed all that in the past 4 years without my daily dose of Happy Hormones, and of course the support of my wonderful friend Lori Woodhouse. Lori also landed her dream job in that time, which combines her skills as a Registered Nurse with a passion for health at Happy Healthy You! This is us at my 50th Birthday Lunch just four weeks ago!
