Cortisol levels: In a study with chronically stressed adults, those who supplemented with Withania Sominfera had significantly reduced levels in cortisol, compared with the control group. The group took the dose of 300mg twice daily for 60 days and demonstrated a 30% reduction in cortisol on average. Elevated cortisol levels are an indication of stress levels and long term negatively impact health and hormonal balance.
Stress: In this 60-day, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study the stress-relieving and pharmacological activity of Withania Somnifera extract was investigated in stressed, healthy adults. Sixty adults were randomly allocated to take either a placebo or 240 mg of a standardized Withania Somnifera extract once daily. In comparison with the placebo, Withania supplementation was associated with a statistically significant reduction in stress levels. Withania intake was also associated with greater reductions in morning cortisol. Testosterone levels increased in males but not females over time. No adverse events reported.
Anxiety: 75 participants were followed for 8 weeks on the trial. Anxiety levels were significantly decreased in the Withania Somnifera group compared to placebo. Significant differences between groups were also observed in mental health, concentration, fatigue, social functioning, vitality, and overall quality of life with the Withania Somnifera group exhibiting greater clinical benefit. No serious adverse reactions were observed in either group.
Sleep: In a study, Withania extract showed sleep-inducing potential, was well tolerated and improved sleep quality and sleep onset latency in patients with insomnia at a dose of 300 mg extract twice daily. This action is more likely to be associated with improve stress reactions rather than a sedative effect.
Inflammation: In one controlled study, the group who took 250 mg of standardized ashwagandha extract daily had a 36% decrease in CRP, on average, compared with a 6% decrease in the placebo group
Cholesterol reduction: In a 60-day study in chronically stressed adults, the group taking the highest dosage of standardized Withania Somnifera extract experienced a 17% decrease in LDL (bad) cholesterol and an 11% decrease in triglycerides, on average
Memory: A prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted in 50 adults. Subjects were treated with either Withania Somnifera extract (300 mg twice daily) or placebo for eight weeks. After eight weeks of study, the Withania Somnifera treatment group demonstrated significant improvements compared with the placebo group in both immediate and general memory. The treatment group also demonstrated significantly greater improvement in executive function, sustained attention, and information-processing speed.
