How to Improve Digestion

How to Improve Digestion

The stomach and digestive organs are the hub of the body. It is where the body absorbs life-giving nutrients, transfers wastes into the bowels from the bloodstream, and rids the body of toxins through bowel motions.

Naturopaths believe that if you treat digestive issues, many other secondary complaints will disappear as healing takes place from within. This means that if you address the root of the problem such as dirty blood, poor elimination, inadequate assimilation of nutrients or insufficient digestive enzyme production, then you can work your way towards healing.

Improved energy comes from better digestion and improved overall health comes from optimising the health of the digestive tract.

It is easy to see why so many people suffer from digestive complaints such as nausea, indigestion, reflux, constipation, and diarrhoea, as well as allergies, high cholesterol and skin problems when the health of the digestive system is abused and overlooked.

Problems with the digestive system

Occasional digestive problems are a common complaint. There are several possible causes ranging from an unhealthy lifestyle and poor nutrition to poor gut bacteria, food sensitivities and infections. Symptoms often go away on their own, but some simple home remedies can ease discomfort and improve overall digestive function.

Common digestive problems include:

  • Stomach discomfort
  • Nausea
  • Gas and bloating
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhoea

More chronic digestive problems include:

  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Heartburn or reflux
  • Gastritis
  • Ulcers

How to improve digestive health

A healthy digestive system is essential as it is where food is turned into nourishment. Not sure where to start so you can achieve better digestive health? Here are six simple but very effective tips:

  • Don't overeat.
  • Divide your eating regimen into well-spaced, nutritionally balanced meals with plenty of fibre, quality oils and fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Take time to eat your food slowly and chew thoroughly. Bolting down your food means that the stomach does not have time to secrete the digestive juices needed for its breakdown. Additionally, chewing well allows enzymes in the saliva to commence digestion before the food reaches the stomach.
  • Stress decreases the amount of energy your body needs for digestion. Try not to eat when you are anxious or angry as it will be harder for your stomach to break down and digest food. Happy Calm could be an option for you if stress is an ongoing concern.

  • Stimulants such as caffeine, alcohol, sugar and cigarettes can adversely affect digestive functions.
  • Increase intake of fresh fruits and choose organic when possible. (Apples, berries, pineapple, honeydew, and paw paw largely help to increase digestive enzyme production.)

Foods that help with digestive health

    • Yoghurt containing live probiotics such as acidophilus and bifidus is a valuable addition to the diet.

    • Include as many varieties of fermented foods to boost natural probiotic levels.
    • Increase consumption of fresh, organic vegetables ( e.g. green leafy veggies, carrots, cucumbers, etc.)

    • Choose lean protein such as tempeh, legumes, unsalted raw nuts and seeds. Nut butters and fish are also great sources of lean protein.

    • Hydration helps achieve optimum digestive health. Drink at least 2 litres of filtered water daily. Fresh vegetable juices also help keep you hydrated.

    • Consume more whole grains such as brown rice, rye, oats, millet, quinoa, amaranth and yeast- or wheat-free bread.

    • Enjoy herbal teas such as peppermint, chamomile, ginger, lemon, fennel and dandelion to improve digestion.

    • Choose healthy oils such as cold-pressed olive oil, olives, avocado, unsalted raw nuts and seeds.

    • Increasing intake of bitter foods can help greatly as bitter foods produce saliva and digestive enzymes which enhance the digestive processes.

    • Begin each day with some lemon juice in a glass of warm water and try apple cider vinegar, slippery elm or digestive enzymes before each meal.

Foods to limit or avoid for better digestive health

Too many of the following in the diet will greatly reduce digestive capacity and put a strain on the digestive organs such as the liver, gall bladder and bowels:

    • Rich and fatty foods

    • Processed, refined, tinned, and preserved foods

    • Sugary and deep-fried foods

    • Alcohol, tea, coffee, soft drinks and cordial

    • Drinking large amounts of water before or after eating dilutes the digestive juices

    • Saturated fats and trans-fatty acids (margarine, canola oil, deep-fried foods)

    • Refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta, cakes and biscuits

    • Yeasted bread

Also, avoid any foods you may be allergic to such as citrus fruits, corn, wheat and milk products.

    Natural remedies for digestion

    • Bitter herbs can help. Among those you can try are Dandelion, Bitter melon, Citrus peel, Fennel, Ginger, Peppermint, Cardamon, Radish seed, Gentian, Cinnamon, Agrimony and Meadowsweet

    • Improve liver function. The liver is critical for overall digestive function and especially relating to fat metabolism. Happy Liver also contains digestive enzymes to assist with digestion and bloating.

    • Slippery elm is a gentle demulcent that soothes the digestion tract, promotes healthy assimilation of nutrients and improves bowel health.

    • Digestive enzyme supplements may help to reduce symptoms of bloating, constipation and inefficient digestion.

    • Probiotics or fermented foods are important not just for gut and bowel health; they also help improve the way your body digests and absorbs food and nutrients. Happy Greens and Turmeric are also a good source of natural probiotics.

    Happy Hormones

In 2020 I started loosing a lot of hair from my crown. It was so distressing to see almost half of my thickness disappear in the last 2years. Then I started taking happy hormones at the beginning of this year and my crown has grown hair as have the sides of my temples which were empty. To say I am happy is an understatement I am forever grateful to have come across this incredible product. View the pictures now and before shots. Thankyou Happy Hormones your product is exceptional!

    Thank Goodness I Found You!

I’ve been having hot flushes for about 4 years or so but am still only peri menopausal. My flushes have pretty much stopped, I probably chose the wrong time of year to start taking these wonder capsules as now I’m feeling the cold here in Melbourne…this time last year I was still walking around in t-shirts and Havi’s! Another amazing benefit is that I was still taking the contraceptive pill to regulate and to prevent severe cramping not only during my cycle but also during ovulation. I decided to stop taking the pill to see if my cycle had stopped naturally as I turned 50 in January, it hasn’t, so the ovulation pain that came 2 weeks later was excruciating and I was effectively bed ridden for 5 days! I was DREADING my period! Whilst ovulating I had starting taking Happy Hormones and lo and behold, when the period arrived, NO PAIN!! I had told my Dr that I had planned on restarting the pill….no longer necessary! I’m so extremely grateful to have found HH and that I took the chance to try something natural…it’s been a complete game changer for me!

    Keep Calm and Carry On

Have been taking HH for about 5 years now and they truly work. The formula of HH is the best I have ever come across. I feel calmer taking them and they keep the hot flushes to either nothing or very mild. I take two capsules twice daily which seems to be the best maintenance dose. Go on try them, HH really work.

    Amazing

I have been taking HH for over a year and each time i think I can go without them I notice such a decrease in energy and mood. They have made a significant difference to my life and mood. I am a shift worker and I highly recommend for any women peri menopausal and low energy levels.

I wish I'd tried HH sooner.

100 Happy Hormone tablets later and WHAT a difference. I cant imagine not taking this little supplement of sanity every day. If you are tossing up needs v's wants .... HH are a need, do this for yourself. I wish I had've ordered sooner.

Happy Hormones is my life saver

I started going through peri menopause and am having a period every 3-5 months. My biggest symptom beside insomnia is hot flushes. I was having one every 10 minutes and I became a very horrible person as I just couldn't stand them. Enter Happy Hormones, I was having 2 morning and night and it wasn't doing anything and then someone on the FB page suggested 3 morning and night and for that I am forever grateful as now I am not grumpy all the time and the hot flushes are like maybe 5 a day now. I am sure my husband and kids thanks you more :)

    Mother's Little Helper

My great friend Lori Woodhouse recommended I take Happy Hormones almost four years ago. It is the only supplement I have really noticed a significant improvement in my well being. I haven't gone without it since! I went from struggling to cope with being a working mum to enjoying parenting, and being able to balance life. I returned to uni whilst still working, finished my degree, and accepted a new job which is interesting, family friendly and challenging. I don't believe I could have managed all that in the past 4 years without my daily dose of Happy Hormones, and of course the support of my wonderful friend Lori Woodhouse. Lori also landed her dream job in that time, which combines her skills as a Registered Nurse with a passion for health at Happy Healthy You! This is us at my 50th Birthday Lunch just four weeks ago!
